Hi Guys,

I would just like to thank everyone that entered into the Dilettante Music Digital Composer-in-Residence competition last month. We had hundreds of applicants from 23 countries and all of them were of an incredibly high standard. After weeks of the judges listening to the submissions, we finally have our three finalists. They are: Aaron Gervais from Canada, David T. Little from the USA and Chiayu also from the USA. The London Sinfonietta have just finished recording the three pieces ...

Your reviewer suggested Tenor Lado Ataneli stole the show (concert perforamnce of Macbeth at Edinburgh Festival). The role of macbeth in Verdis opera is of course written for a baritone and fortunately Lado Ataneli is a baritone. She also seems unaware that Verdi said there were three main characters - macbeth, lady macbeth and the witches. The Edinburgh housewives who made up the distaff side of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus sang as if they were witches on a daily basis. Magnificent !

I was suprised to read Marc Brooks' review of Lohengrin, in which he complains about Jonas Kaufmann's voice. Goodness knows where he was sitting in the opera house to make such an observation - although Munich does have some difficult seats for sound quality. I attended the second and third performances of the production, and sitting in the stalls, can only say that Mr Kaufmann exceeded all expectation with the quality of his singing. Over the last ten years when I have been listening to him ...

It sounds like Richard Eyre's return to redirect the production for the first time since it was first shown in 1994 has made a big impact.

I don't know the details of any deals but it strikes me as both strange and rather sad to see such a high profile recording (the cast included Voigt in her considerable prime, Heppner, Dessay and Von Otter) seemingly written off in such a way. It also doesn't seem much of a tribute to Sinopoli; presumably with all his recordings being ...

So if you happen to come accross a particular opera video on youtube you find interesting then post it as a reply in this topic for the rest of us to discuss.

This doesn't really have much potential for development, in fact it's more like a letter to a free newspaper, but I'm sick of trying to get tickets to opera/musicals/theatre in London only to find, at best, that a mere handful are left, and they in the upper circles. Or worst, tickets costing in the hundreds of pounds left for the ROH. What a world! I defy the credit crunch to make my theatre going life a bit less troublesome.

Has anyone out there seen ENO's new Riders to the Sea? I though it was very poor, notwithstanding the excellent Sibelius addition, but much of the reviews seem to contradict my reaction (www.musicalcriticism.com/opera/eno-riders-1108.shtml). Any thoughts? I'm aware it is a very sensitive subject considering the very sad death of Richard Hickox last week, he was after all due to conduct the production as you're all probably aware, but I tried to react as neutrally as I could to the actual performance.

Thanks to Delia Casadei for a wonderful review of the above concert. I would only comment that Alsop's conducting was "not as explosive" for the Dvorak because the Bartok calls for that kind of movement, while the Dvorak does not. The Wooden Prince is one of those works (Mahler's 4th comes to mind also) in which the conductor's work is more visible than in other works. The colourings and tempo changes, for example, keep the conductor on ror toes. And Ms. Alsop is on her toes like ...
