Hi Guys,

I would just like to thank everyone that entered into the Dilettante Music Digital Composer-in-Residence competition last month. We had hundreds of applicants from 23 countries and all of them were of an incredibly high standard. After weeks of the judges listening to the submissions, we finally have our three finalists. They are: Aaron Gervais from Canada, David T. Little from the USA and Chiayu also from the USA. The London Sinfonietta have just finished recording the three pieces ...

Hvorostovski is definitely one of the most powerful voices around, and he's really eclectic - he's at ease with Verdian roles, as with Russian and Neapolitan folk songs. But what happens when he sings Handel? Here's the performance I have in mind:

and here's the same aria as it was performed during the contest that made him famous:

I was wondering how everybody feels about this kind of interpretation. ...

Tickets for Opera/Musicals

This doesn't really have much potential for development, in fact it's more like a letter to a free newspaper, but I'm sick of trying to get tickets to opera/musicals/theatre in London only to find, at best, that a mere handful are left, and they in the upper circles. Or worst, tickets costing in the hundreds of pounds left for the ROH. What a world! I defy the credit crunch to make my theatre going life a bit less troublesome.

I thought this would be an interesting topic where we could make suggestions as how to make the forum better (if its not already ).

I'd personally like a separate section for WNO, Glyndebourne and the other main opera companies based in the UK. Also i think an section to discuss opera in general would be good

British conductor Richard Hickox has passed away suddenly. He died of a suspected heart attack.

This is very sad news. I have several of his recordings, but I never went to any of his performances.

I'm off to see the BBCSO under Belohlavek in Beethoven's Missa Solemnis tonight. I'm curious to know what people think of this work, especially in terms of their attitude to other 'great' works by the same composer. I suggest this topic with respect to Adorno's proposal around the Missa that it is a strangely empty piece that people include in the canon of great Beethovenian works simply because they don't know how else to react to its strange repetitions and somewhat empty rhetoric (I'm paraphrasing ...

Hi just wanted to say that i just recently saw the musical Wicked. I'd been meaning to see it ever since it opened but had been put off by mixed reviews, 2 of my friends who are avid musical comedy fans didn't like it at all. Finally made the plunge and went with my mother. We both absolutely loved it, it's clever inversion of the story of the wicked witch of the west from the Wizard of Oz who isn't really wicked, and the good witch Glinda who isn't really good but spoilt, vain and self-serving. ...

I apologise that some people are reporting problems in registering for the forum. Unfortunately, it's out of our control - the forum isn't hosted by the website and we have no power over it. However, I'm assured that if you use non-Hotmail-type email accounts, it'll work fine; it's also worth keeping an eye on the junkmail box. And to be honest, my Hotmail account worked without mishap. Apologies to those having difficulties, however.
