SCOTTISH OPERA NOMINATED FOR TMA AWARD
Scottish Opera has been nominated for the TMA (Theatrical Management Association) Theatre Award for Achievement in Opera for Scottish composer Judith Weir’s A Night at the Chinese Opera, which toured Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness earlier this year.

The awards are among the most prestigious annual theatre awards granted in the UK.

Directed by Lee Blakely and conducted by Siān Edwards, the production won many rave reviews.

In turns comic, melodramatic, farcical and tragic, A Night at the Chinese Opera combines catchy folk melodies with parodies of Chinese and Italian opera.

Scottish Opera’s production starred singers Reno Troilus, Nicholas Warden, Toby Stafford-Allen, Philip Salmon, Jane Harrington, Damien Thantrey, Fiona Kimm, Andrew Mackenzie-Wick, Rebecca de Pont Davies, Sarah Redgwick and Stephen Chaundy.

The creative team behind the production included designer Jean-Marc Puissant, lighting designer Jenny Cane and movement director Kally Lloyd-Jones.

Other nominations in the Achievement in Opera category include Glyndebourne’s Hansel und Gretel, Opera North’s summer Shakespeare Season of Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo et Juliette, and Welsh National Opera’s The Sacrifice.
