Missa Solemnis

Post  StephenG on Fri Oct 03, 2008 5:27 pm

I'm off to see the BBCSO under Belohlavek in Beethoven's Missa Solemnis tonight. I'm curious to know what people think of this work, especially in terms of their attitude to other 'great' works by the same composer. I suggest this topic with respect to Adorno's proposal around the Missa that it is a strangely empty piece that people include in the canon of great Beethovenian works simply because they don't know how else to react to its strange repetitions and somewhat empty rhetoric (I'm paraphrasing quite ridiculously of course). Any thoughts? My feeling is that it's religious subject, anbd its proximity to its composer's death have certainly helped program a certain awe around it in terms of reception, but I also regularly enjoy it on a purely musical level, even if it does leave me feeling a bit cold, invariably.

Hi Stephen,
I'll have to check out your review of the concert in a bit. As it happens, I was singing in this concert. I didn't know this work overly well to start with, but grew to love it in the end. It's such a fantastic piece, it's a shame it doesn't receive greater recognition as such. I wonder why that is...
