Dichterliebe
I very much enjoyed Hugo's review on Gerald Finley's new CD of Dichterliebe and other Heine settings. Dichterliebe is just about my favorite song cycle and have a modest collection of recordings though (needless to say) GF's version is the best as far as I'm concerned. However, I would love to know if Heinrich Schlusnus ever recorded it. Do any of you know of such a recording? I have him singing Ich Grolle Nicht but none of the other songs.

Re: Dichterliebe
No luck after a quick look on google. I think, as whole, recordings of complete cycles were real rarities in the days before LPs. I came across Alan Blyth's Song on Record (the Lieder volume) on Google Books but couldn't get it to work. I'm sure that would give an answer.
Just been listening to Sarah Connolly's new Schumann disc, too. It's not out until next Monday but quite an interesting one. It seems to me that there's something of a tendency to veer towards the reticent in Schumann these days... http://www.musicalcriticism.com/recordings/cd-schumann-connolly-0908.shtml

Re: Dichterliebe
Hallo, I just joined. No, there is no recording of Dichterliebe by Schlusnus; the oldest recordings of the work, to my knowledge, are a partial one by Richard Tauber (very beautiful but not exactly a psychogram, if you see what I mean), a complete one with Charles Panzéra & Cortot - which is not far removed from what one might expect from Schlusnus, though P's German is slightly accented, Lotte Lehmann & Bruno Walter and the canonical recording by Aksel Schiötz & Moore, one of my own personal favourites together with Hans Hotter & Altmann, Gérard Souzay & Bonneau, Brigitte Fassbaender & Reimann and Prégardien & Staier. Pears & Britten is also remarkable, though some, I know, cannot bear Pears's voice and diction. What do you find so remarkable about Finley's version?Janet Woodall wrote:I very much enjoyed Hugo's review on Gerald Finley's new CD of Dichterliebe and other Heine settings. Re: Dichterliebe
The problem about that is that Google have made a mistake and put the 2nd volume (on non-German song) there twice - very annoying, as I have the latter and cannot afford the inflated prices for vol.1.hugo wrote:... Re: Dichterliebe
Thanks for all the info MJ. I too have the french song volume of the Blyth, and although I've seen both volumes for sale a couple of times, they've always been more than I can reasonably justify paying, so can identify with that!
